Toyama Castle & Matsukawa River Cruise — Urban Moat Boat Ride
Toyama Castle (富山城) is a reconstructed castle in central Toyama City, originally built in the 16th century and destroyed multiple times through war and fire. The current tenshu (main keep) is a 1954 concrete reconstruction housing the Toyama City Folk Museum. While the castle lacks historical authenticity compared to original-structure castles, the surrounding Toyama Castle Park is pleasant, with cherry blossoms in spring and illuminated moats in evening.
The unique experience is the Matsukawa River Cruise (松川遊覧船) — a 30-minute narrated boat ride along the castle's outer moat (now the Matsukawa River) passing under bridges and through tree-lined waterways. The cruise offers perspectives of the castle, riverside cherry trees (500+ trees bloom late March–early April), and urban Toyama from the water. In spring, the cruise passes beneath tunnels of cherry blossoms; in summer, greenery shades the boat; autumn brings red foliage.
The combination of castle grounds and moat cruise makes a relaxing half-day urban activity, especially during cherry blossom season when the river becomes a pink corridor.
