Toyama Glass Art Museum — Contemporary Glass in Kengo Kuma Design
The Toyama Glass Art Museum (富山市ガラス美術館, TOYAMAキラリ) is a striking contemporary museum designed by architect Kengo Kuma, featuring a facade of geometric wood louvers, glass panels, and aluminum. The building houses a permanent collection of modern glass art, including works by Dale Chihuly and other international glass artists, alongside rotating exhibitions focused on contemporary glass sculpture and installation art.
Toyama City has promoted glass art since 1985 as a cultural identity, establishing glass-making workshops, training programs, and annual festivals. The museum, opened in 2015, serves as the culmination of this three-decade initiative. The interior features Kuma's signature aesthetic: interlocking wooden lattices (sogi, 削ぎ) creating a luminous atrium that filters natural light, echoing traditional Japanese architecture while showcasing contemporary art.
The museum's highlight is the permanent installation on the 6th floor: a collection of vibrant glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly arranged in a dramatic ceiling installation and gallery displays. The contrast between Kuma's minimalist wood-and-glass architecture and Chihuly's explosive color creates a memorable visual dialogue.
