Usa Jingu — Head Shrine of 40,000 Hachiman Shrines

Usa Jingu, established in 725 AD, is the head shrine of all Hachiman shrines in Japan (numbering 40,000+). Hachiman is the syncretic deity combining the deified Emperor Ojin with Buddhist elements — making Usa Jingu historically significant as a site where Shinto and Buddhism merged. The shrine complex contains three main halls in the unique Hachiman-zukuri architectural style (two buildings connected under one roof).

The approach from the base of Mt. Omoto to the shrine requires crossing two vermillion bridges over a pristine river, climbing stone steps through forest, passing through multiple torii gates — a 20-minute ascent that creates ceremonial progression.
